Information on how to use research analytics tools to gauge research impact by author, article, or institution.

Analyzing Author Impact with Google Scholar and Publish or Perish

How do I calculate metrics for my publications in Google Scholar?

Author metrics are only available in Google Scholar if the author has created a profile. Those authors with profiles have an underlined (hyperlinked) name in the results list. Metrics available are the h-index, the i10-index (the number of publications with at least 10 citations), and number of citations by year. To create a profile, click on the “My Citations” link, which appears on most Google Scholar screens.

How do I calculate metrics for my publications in Publish or Perish?

1. If you have not done so already, download and install the software at: http://www.harzing.com/pop.htm

2. On the right side of the screen, click “New.”  You will have three options; we recommend using “Google Scholar Query.”

3. Fill in the search box with your name (or the author you want to look up), then click “Lookup” in the upper-right-hand corner.

4. In the results list, check the boxes next to your articles. It is possible there could be duplicate entries for the same article, publications that are not scholarly (and that you may not wish to include), or articles by another researcher that shares your name.  The citation metrics will automatically be recalculated as you check or uncheck boxes.

Note: For a discussion of how to make use of author metrics, see The Publish or Perish Book.
