Wyoming State Science Fair: Visiting UW Libraries

A research guide for Energy in the West essay contest.

Guide for High School Teachers

We are pleased to welcome you and your students to the University Libraries. Your students are potential University of Wyoming students so we want to make their visit here successful. This guide is designed to make your student's experience positive and productive.

Please contact the Learning Resource Center to schedule classroom instruction for your students. It is also important that you have students complete the Parental Permission form (below) and send the documents to Coe Library Circulation before your visit.

We strongly encourage you to work with your school or public librarian to ensure that your students take full advantage of the numerous WYLD databases available through Wyoming public and school libraries.

Preparing for Your Visit

It is important to do several things BEFORE you visit.

  • Let us know when you are coming. Two weeks advance notice is preferable.
  • Have a parent or guardian complete a Parental Permission form and make a copy of their government issued photo ID.  Then mail or fax these 2 items for each student to us. This will enable us to have the library cards ready at the circulation desk at the time of your arrival.
  • Arrange to have adequate adult supervision for your visit. At least one adult per ten students is recommended.
  • Contact Coe Library Circulation: 307-766-3190, libcirc@uwyo.edu, or fax 307-766-2510

Libraries at UW

The University of Wyoming Libraries includes several facilities and collections.  Of particular interest for your visit may be one of the following:

Learning Resource Center: materials to support K-12 education

Coe Library: the main library on campus

Brinkerhoff Geology Library: branch library of geological resources emphasizing WY and the Rocky Mountain region

Non-UW library users have access to physical materials such as books and DVDs.  Access to electronic materials is more limited. Visit the Help Desk or ask a librarian if you need assistance.

Registration

To check out library materials, students must have a library card. There is no charge to register for a library card. All students under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian complete a Parental Permission form and submit a copy of their parent's/guardian's government issued photo ID. After receiving these items, the library will issue a library card.

  • The parent or guardian is responsible for any charges assessed for long overdue, lost or damaged books.
  • Student borrowers must update their registration annually until they turn 18 years of age.
  • Students must notify the library of any change of address. This may be done by phone, mail, email or fax.

Borrowing Policies

  • Students may borrow a maximum of 15 books at a time.
  • The loan period for books located in the stacks is 28 days. Some books will have a shorter loan period (like those from popular reading). A book may be renewed twice if no one else has requested the book. For complete loan period details click here.
  • Books can be renewed online from here. Since students visiting from schools are not affiliated with the University of Wyoming, they will need to provide their name and barcode number from their library card for access to renewing materials.
  • Self-service scanning is available on Level 2 of Coe Library, near the Help Desk. Documents may be saved to email, usb flash drive, and more.
