Like Hodge’s 1912 Handbook (see below), this 20 volume set is designed to summarize knowledge about all American Indians north of Mexico. Articles are authored by experts and cover history and prehistory, culture, languages and human biology.

First published in 1912, the Handbook gives brief descriptions of all Indian tribes north of Mexico. Descriptions include history, ethnic relations, location, population statistics and a list of sources. Contributors include some of the most famous 19th century anthropologists.
