First Year Students' Guide to UW Libraries

Coe Library Study Space

William Robertson Coe Library, UW's largest library, has approximately 1,500 study spaces and the widest range of study options.  [Hours]

Student Learning Commons: Open study and collaboration area on Coe Level 1.

Quiet Study: Open areas on levels 3 and 4 of the bookstacks are dedicated to quiet study. There is seating for 300+ at tables, carrels, and lounge chairs. 

Group Study: Open areas on levels 1, 2 (including the McMurry Reading Room), and 5, plus the east end of level 3 are available for group study. There is space for up to 720+ at tables and lounge areas in these areas. 

There are 4 collaborative pods on levels 1 and 2, each with space for up to for five users. 

Computers: There are 138 computers in labs managed by UW IT on levels 1, 2, and 3. Some are set up for individual use and some are set up for both individual and small group use. Coe Circulation lends laptops for in-library use and iPads for out-of-library use.  WiFi is accessible throughout the building.

Study Rooms:  21 study rooms (located located throughout the building) are available for individual and group study. They  are equipped with tables and whiteboards; most of the rooms have computers and wall-mounted monitors. For particulars on study room capacity or equipment see the Reserve-a-Room or inquire at the Help Desk.

Coffee Shop: The Book & Bean, located near the Coe entrance on level 2, has 25 seats primarily for coffee shop's clientele but they can pursue collaborative work at the same time. Additional food services are available in the nearby Wyoming Union.

Other: Level 1 has individual viewing/listening carrels. Coe Library also contains the Chisum Special Collections Reading Room, whose tables are dedicated to use of the collections and not for general study.

Printers: Student printing is available in computer labs at Coe Library, the Geology Library, and at additional lab locations across campus. Black and white printing is 5 cents per page with increases for double-sided pages. Color printing is available at the Coe Library labs for 25 cents per page. Printing from student computer labs is paid with individual Student Print Account funds.

Studio Coe is a staffed multimedia lab. 

You can drop in and get help with Adobe CC software programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate and more), video-editing software (iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premiere), audio-editing software (Audacity, Adobe Audition and Logic Pro) and game-development software (Visual Studio Code, Unity and Blendr). Studio Coe is located in Coe 237 on Level 2. This is a drop-in lab, meaning no appointment is needed.

Thanks to a grant from the Center Student Technology Fund, we have purchased two HP Z4 G4 Workstations with HTC Vive Pro 3d virtual reality headsets. While only one is currently available, students, staff, faculty, and community members are able to experience (Google Earth VR, The Museum of Fine Art VR, and The Body VR), explore (Gravity Sketch VR, The Lab, and OpenBrush) and create experiences (Blender, Unity, and Microsoft Visual Studio Code) in virtual reality!

The Voice Box is a soundproof audio recording room located in Studio Coe.

The Voice Box can be used to make podcasts, songs, and other audio projects. Please contact Studio Coe staff at 307 766-7002 (leave a message) or email studioco@uwyo.edu to make a reservation. Drop-in use is available with preference towards reservations.

The One Button Studio is a video recording space that you can use to create video projects or practice presentations.

The Coe Student Innovation Center is a 2500-square-foot makerspace that provides access to state-of-the-art emergent technology for creative, collaborative, innovative and entrepreneurial projects. The equipment in the CSIC supports 3D printing and scanning; sewing, embroidery, e-textiles and vinyl cutting; large format printing, scrapbooking and laminating.
