Sources of Data for Statistical Analyses

  • SimplyMap is a statistics and data tool with a map interface.
  • Fantastic source for demographics, consumer information, business data, and market data.
  • Create cool maps and visualizations.

Qualitative Data Repository

  • Project hosted at Syracuse University that curates and hosts data from qualitative social science projects.

  • The site provides detailed guidance, written specifically for social science researchers collecting qualitative data, on key topics such as data management, research involving human participants, and teaching with qualitative data.

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)

  • ICPSR is a data archive that contains hundreds of thousands of data files, mostly related to social, political, and health research.
  • The majority of datasets are free, but check documentation for any file you might use for restrictions. Files are typically downloadable in a variety of statistical software formats.
  • To access restricted data sets from off-campus, you will need to create a personal log-in account using your UW email address

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)

  • WRDS contains economic data, historic stock prices, company financials, corporate governance information, marketing data, and more.
  • Datasets UW subscribe to include Compustat, CRSP, Bureau van Dijk, and IBES, among others.
  • Account required (free for UW affiliates, but restricted to faculty, staff, and graduate students -sorry no undergrads).
