Spring 2015

Organize Your Research with FlowFlow can help you organize your research, even if you already have folders of random article PDFs. This workshop will walk you through setting up your account, importing citations from library databases and journals, and importing existing documents you have collected as well as how to export bibliographies in a variety of citation formats. Session led by Kaijsa Calkins, English Research Librarian and Bryan Ricupero, Metadata Librarian. 

Retaining your Author Rights: PublishingPublishing in the digital world offers the benefit of wide dissemination for those scholars who maintain their author rights. Learn more about rights retention and why it matters. Session led by Kelly Visnak, Scholarly Communication Librarian. 

Using Library Tutorials in WyoCourses: Add library tutorials to your WyoCourses class to teach students how to do tasks like searching for articles, finding citations in a database, and using ebooks. This workshop will cover how to find tutorials and add them to your course. Participants  are encouraged to share ideas for new tutorials and learn about working with librarians to make them. Session led by Kate Conerton, Distance Learning Librarian

Writing a Review of the Literature: David Kruger, Agriculture Librarian, will demonstrate how to find resources for a review of literature, with a special focus on difficult-to-find items like conference proceedings and theses. Margaret Garner, Director of the Writing Center, will help participants learn how to put the material together for an effective review. Some hands-on work will be done. Come with questions!

Managing References with EndNote Desktop (for Windows): Explore capabilities of managing your references for serious research and scholarship beyond the basics of most citation management systems. See demos on how to import citation records and organize a sharable reference library; attach, annotate, and search article PDFs; and create in-text citations and bibliographies in any of 6000+ citation styles using the Cite While You Write plug-in for MS Word. To practice, bring your laptop with EndNote Desktop pre-installed. Note: Instruction session will end at 3:00 p.m. and an hour of optional practice time will follow. Session led by Judy Pasek, STEM Liaison Librarian.

What works on your mobile device? Ebooks and More! (Feb 7): Bring your smartphones and tablets and find out how to access library materials for research and fun. You'll learn what's available through the Libraries and have hands-on time to get started setting up your device. Bring your questions! Session led by Kaijsa Calkins, English & Humanities Liaison Librairan and Julia Proctor, Electronic Resources Librarian. 

Writing a review of the literature (Feb 12): Writing a review of the literature is a difficult task for many researchers, from finding all of the relevant publications to putting the material together for an effective review. In this session we’ll discuss how to find tricky citations (like conference proceedings and government information) and we’ll talk about strategies for organizing and writing the review itself. Some hands-on work will be done. Session led by Melissa Bowles-Terry, Instruction & Assessment Coordinator and Maggie Garner, Writing Center Director.

Using RefWorks or RefWorks Flow for Citation and Document Management (Feb 14): RefWorks and RefWorks Flow can help you organize your research. This workshop will address: • Whether RefWorks or RefWorks Flow better meets your needs. • How to set up an account in either RefWorks or Flow • How to add citations and articles to your account • How to create a simple bibliography using RefWorks or Flow Session led by Cheryl Goldenstein, Education Librarian.

Publishing: Copyright and Authors’ Rights (Feb 20): What do you need to know about copyrights, user rights, and author rights when publishing your own work? This session will discuss rights management and assist attendees in understanding the level of rights that are available to them both as an author and as a researcher. We will look at a couple author rights agreements and address the legal language used and how to negotiate the rights they need. Session led by Kelly Visnak, Scholarly Communication Librarian.
