Historical Newspapers: Locating Newspapers in Catalog

This guide provides information for accessing historical newspaper that may be in print, microform, or digitized. The date range for historical newspapers is loosely defined as five years ago or longer.

Identifying Newspapers in the Library Catalog

The best place to determine what newspapers are available from the UW Libraries is the Libraries' Catalog.

  • If you are searching by subject leave the Search Type at "Keyword"; if you are looking for a specific newspaper change it to "Title."
  • Change Search Scope from "All libraries @ UW" to "Journals."
  • Enter your search terms and perform the search.
  • Select a title from the search list--see sample below for the Wyoming newspaper, Dubois Frontier.

Several pieces of information from the catalog record are worth noting to make locating the newspaper easier.

  • Call No. provides the title's library shelf address.
  • Location provides the library or collection within the library where the title is found.
  • Library Has provides subscription information, holdings, and if the Libraries have it in microform or online.
  • Latest Received provides date of latest issue.
