Databases for Industry Research

​Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage

  • Excellent and frequently updated source of industry overviews by the experts at Standard & Poor's
  • Click the Industries tab near top of the homepage to browse by industry
  • Industry reports include industry overviews, trends, key ratios, & more

Passport from Euromonitor

  • Reports for over 20 broad industries with international scope
  • For example, find analysis on the footwear industry in the US or home furnishings in China
  • Lots of great market and consumer reports as well

Business Insights: Essentials

  • One-stop shop for industry and company information including articles, reports, news, and financial data
  • Check out Industry Essays under the Industries tab for entries from the Encyclopedia of American Industries
  • Click on the Comparison Charts tab to view companies' revenues or industry performance

Business Source Premier

  • Contains country-specific Industry Profiles for a variety of industries and nations
  • From the homepage, try searching for your industry by name (e.g. "telecommunications") in the top search box, with "industry profile" in the second search box next to "AND." 

ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry

  • Includes trade publications and newsletters searchable through the Data & Reports section
  • From the homepage, click Data & Reports near the top of the page, then either keyword search or search by NAICS code using the NAICS lookup near the bottom center of the page
  • Use the checkboxes under the search box to limit to industry reports

GlobalEdge Industry Profiles: By Michigan State University, the Industry Profiles page has detailed overviews of 20 industries. Check out the Resources link in the left menu of an industry page for other industry-specific websites. FREE!

Economic Census: A vast source of industry information, including number of establishments within an industry, payroll, revenue, and more. Data can be filtered by geography down to county or city.


Many databases allow for searching by industry codes such as NAICS. NAICS codes, and its older counterpart, SIC, are classification codes for specific industries.

  • Some databases also allow searching by SIC, which you can look up here
  • However, SIC codes are dated and tend to be less specific
